An artist’s impression shows Nasa’s Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (Maven) spacecraft orbiting Mars. After travelling for more than ten month from Earth to Mars, the Maven spacecraft on 22 September is slowing down and swinging into an orbit around the Red Planet. Maven is devoted to understanding the planet’s upper atmosphere. It will help determine what caused the Martian atmosphere and water to be lost to space, making the climate increasingly inhospitable for life.
